DJ R.I.A RIA Rhythms In Action by Will Solsi

Kia Ora

We were created in rhythm, kept alive through rhythm, and evolve through rhythm. We are all rhythmic beings, and just like nature itself we have a natural rhythm that exists in all of us. Rhythms In Action is Shaki, the feminine energy that moves us to the great pulse of life.

My name is Rire, aka R.I.A. I originate from the land of the Long White Cloud, known in Maori as Aotearoa. I now call the Northern Rivers of NSW home. I honour the original custodians of this land.

Rhythms in Action is me when I’m activated, harnessing my creative expression. The place I lose myself in a flow state, and surrender to the rhythm, to Shakti!

Music and DJing as been my consistent in this life.

I have been very blessed to have had an incredible, action-packed career in the music industry in my earlier years. I ran jam nights, radio shows, and events, was involved in huge productions and festivals, music award ceremonies, and worked with big-scale sponsorships, record labels, and music magazines, and brushed shoulders with some greats.

During these inspiring years in Sydney, I was obsessed with house, funk, disco, and electro and during the early 2000s, I collected an impressive collection of vinyl. Then came the CD J’s. Due to my involvement in radio, I curated many wallets flaunting every genre under the sun.

While working in NZ I was fondly known for pushing the ghetto-funk sound which merged seamlessly into jump-up drum and bass and breaks and on the down-tempo tip Neo-Soul, jazzy beats, Reggae, dancehall, and dub music.

Then in 2010, I went to Burning Man…. They say Burning Man changes your life, and it’s no joke. It was like everything I thought I knew was shattered into 1,000 pieces. I was burnt out, exhausted, and desperate for change. I was looking for a greater purpose, depth, and meaning. It was time for my awakening.

I grew up in an alternative environment. We lived on an island and had to be very resourceful in order to thrive. My dad was a truth seeker and followed various Gurus and spiritual mentors. My mum was the most courageous woman I knew bringing up 3 children in a caravan off-grid. So, when it came time to shift from the no-rest, often booze-fueled existence I had been living, it was effortless.

I came home. Home to a place I never left.

From here it lead me on a 10-year journey of remembrance and awakening absorbing every personal development program, workshop, and podcast/audio I could get my hands on. I broke free from the shackles of full-time employment and set course to my True North.

In 2014 I started my Yoga Teacher Training and started teaching a lot of yoga. At the same time got invited to work as a DJ with the AUS/NZ arm of Wanderlust. It was here that my love for music really took a great twist into the deeper, subtle realms of ambient and electronica.

Djing for Yoga was profound. I wasn’t just playing in a yoga studio. I got to DJ for HUGE 2,000 people sessions at the biggest yoga festivals seen in NZ/Australia with some world-class teachers. Each time I curated a set for a Yoga experience I felt like a movie composer scouring music for a film. The level of depth and sensitivity felt during these times were awe-inspiring.

During this time I co-created a Yoga Dance outfit called Yoga-Rhythms.

A Yoga Rhythms experience was carefully curated around a solid foundation of mind-bending beats - powerful world rhythms, cosmic bass, and sacred chill all blended live to guided rhythmic Vinyasa, responsive choreography, and ecstatic dance, topped off with a multi-sensory Savasana.   I worked with some amazing facilitators and did many festivals, events, and mini-tours… Then It was time for me to become initiated in embodied arts.

2017 I set off to Bali and did my first Elemental Awakening Retreat and 5 Elements Dance Teacher Training with Malaika Darville. A powerful shamanic initiation to empty out emotionally and set the stage within to lead a dance wave of embodiment through the cardinal elements for men & women.

It's a modality based around the global movement of transformation that holds the same integrity and focus as yoga, yet at the same time allows an authentic expression to enliven and awaken the human spirit to a greater capacity for truth, environmental compassion, and self-awareness.

I was enrolled to support Malaika to teach DJing and Music for Business as I had been working in social media and digital marketing for some time. It was truly a dream to support her and the students in this way and share my gifts. This is where I developed my DJ Skills for Empowered Facilitators Program which I have also taught for Leyolah Antaras Kundalini Dance Training.

During the Covid Era, I received the greatest gift of all… A powerful initiation from Maiden to Mother. Words can not describe the depths a woman has to journey to take this voyage. To allow her old self, her maiden self to die for the mother to be born.

Now nearly 2 years on after the birth of my Son, like the Lotus that journies through the muddy waters, a new, more embodied, wise, and integrated me is blooming forth.

What do I play?

I am deeply passionate about Global Music; Organic house, Afro House, Global Club House, Organic Down Tempo, Tribal Bass, Afro-Beat, Drum and Bass and when i’m called upon Funk & Funky House!
